It is hosted by drag queen legend Roxy Wood and has had celebrity guests bingo callers like Sia, Emma Stones, Amy Adams, and even Brtiney Spears. For me, drag is inherently political because it is a way to disrupt heteronormative codes and discourses. Historically, drag queens have been gay men dressing up as female impersonators or even trans women dressing up in female garments to accentuate their appearances.

Nowadays, gender identity is now less important to do drag; anyone can do drag irrespective of their gender identity or sexuality. The drag community welcomes everyone, no matter if you are gay, straight, cisgender, non-binary, or even trans. It is a form of gender expression which allows you to express yourself.

What can I expect at a drag show, and where do they take place?

Drag is an art form and typically consists of lip-syncs, live cabarets, live singing, comedy acts, standup, group numbers, or even dance routines, and some acts may even be a combination of all these. Most drag shows typically have an MC or Master of Ceremonies, which will typically be the main attraction and will be the one who will introduce most of the performers.

Drag shows are typically held and hosted in queer spaces like gay bars and clubs, but with the rise of the popularity of drag shows, now they also take place in large arenas and theaters. You can typically expect to see drag shows in large cities like New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or even Chicago and Atlanta. Look at your local queer bars and see if they are hosting any future drag shows.

Remember, a local drag show isn’t like an episode of drag race; they most likely don’t have the same budget and don’t expect to see the same kind of clothes but expect the same kind of energy because a drag queen will perform the house down boots if it is the last thing they do.

So, even if you aren’t a fan of a particular number, don’t boo them; it is not nice for either of you. They’ve most likely than not worked meticulously to prepare their look and routine, so be supportive, that free and is something that anyone can do.

2. Consent is key

No matter how fabulous they may seem, you should also be cogniscient that drag performers are people at the end of the day. Remember, consent is sexy, and never behave in any way that would leave the performers uncomfortable and safe. Treat them with respect and how you would want to be treated, ask for consent if you want to touch and hug them for a photo. Remember, never touch a drag queen’s hair because it’s a wig and isn’t meant to be played with.

3. Have fun

Choosing a Character to Cosplay

The difficulty of your cosplay depends on the character you choose. For example, cosplaying as Ryu from Street Fighter is fairly easy—just wear a sleeveless karate gi, a red ribbon around your head, and go barefoot. On the other hand, cosplaying as Lich King Arthas from World of Warcraft is a lot harder!

If you’re not too crafty (like myself), you’ll have an easier time cosplaying as characters that don’t wear suits of armor or have complicated, multi-layered outfits.

Do You Have to Look Like Your Character?

You don’t have to even slightly resemble your character in order to cosplay as them—really, you don’t even need to be the same gender. The features that make you unique will also make your cosplay look unique (and that’s the best part).

It may be slightly easier to cosplay as a character that has the same eye color or hair color as you, but ultimately it doesn’t matter because you can always make yourself look like the character.

Wigs, colored contacts, and makeup can bring any cosplay to life. When purchasing a wig, choose one that’s high-quality; otherwise, your wig will get tangled easily and won’t look as natural.

And while you don’t necessarily need colored contacts, they can add a nice finishing touch to your cosplay (especially if you’re cosplaying a red-eyed character like Makoto Nijima from Persona 5).

And, of course, makeup is a great way to fake your character’s look. If you’re not sure how to approach your makeup, head to YouTube. Plenty of expert cosplayers have makeup tutorials for specific characters.

Should You Create Your Cosplay or Buy It?

There’s a huge debate between buying and making your own cosplay. Some say that buying a cosplay isn’t as valid as making one yourself; well, they’re wrong. Whether you buy or create your cosplay, it still counts as cosplaying.

Yeah, creating a cosplay from scratch can be super satisfying, but it comes with plenty of its own challenges. You need to own a sewing machine, know how to sew, know how to find the right fabrics and patterns, etc.

Making armor is even more difficult in some ways, unless you compromise with something like craft foam to construct faux-metal.

Where to Buy Cosplay Outfits

If you aren’t very hands-on, there’s no shame in buying your entire costume online—or depending on who you want to cosplay, the outfit might even be available at a local Halloween store or party shop.

There are plenty of sites online that offer pre-made outfits of characters from video games, anime, manga, superhero movies, and more. The costumes can be a bit pricey, but buying one will save you a lot of time.

And you’ll have more confidence! There’s nothing worse than making your own costume and feeling embarrassed while you wear it. You can even create a cosplay out of both bought materials and custom-made materials.

Don’t go fancy with the materials you buy—head to your nearest thrift shop and see if you can put together a makeshift outfit. The clothes might need some modification, and that’s where your craftiness comes in.

When you make your final decision about a character, always consider the weather during the time of the convention. If you choose to cosplay the Ice Climbers at a summer convention, you’ll instantly regret it.

Nothing’s worse than standing in a crowded, hot environment when you’re wearing heavy layers. The air conditioning inside the convention center usually doesn’t help—the crowds of people inside make it exceptionally warm.

Cosplaying a scantily-clad character in the dead of winter isn’t smart, either. How can you show off your cosplay when you’re wearing a jacket the entire time?

Yeah, you’ll see cosplayers defying the odds as they cosplay Halo’s Master Chief during the summer or Jade from Mortal Kombat during the winter… but although they look composed, they’re definitely feeling the temperature!

When you’re at a convention all day, your eye shadow will begin to fade and your mascara will start running. Make sure to pack a small bag with extra makeup.

You don’t have to lug your entire makeup studio with you, but you’ll likely need essential items like foundation, eye shadow, mascara, lipstick, and so on. If your friends notice your makeup fading, head to the bathroom and do some touch-ups.

The first time I ever cosplayed at a convention, I went as Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII. Since I didn’t think my cosplay turned out that great, I really didn’t expect anyone would actually want a photo of me—and while people were pulling their phones out, I just stood there and smiled like a dork until they took my picture.

I’ve since learned my lesson. When you cosplay, you must become your character. Cosplaying as Deadpool? Pose like a smart aleck. Maybe you decide to go as Spiderman, in which case you can pretend to shoot out webs. Quirky poses can really improve your cosplay game, and it’s fun!

The first thing you need to do is secure the garden so that the adults present can have a relaxing time. There is nothing worse than a party where parents live in fear that their children will break something or get hurt. It is advisable to mow the lawn and protect any uncovered bumps and thorny roses with a fence or straight wooden fence. Decorate the Garden for the Party

To make the party more exciting, you need to decorate it properly. To save money, you can make flags to hang among the trees, choose fabric by the meter, cut out lots of triangles, and staple them to the string.

You could also be environmentally conscious and choose balloons or biodegradable tableware. A garland of lights set up outdoors is a great idea for a warmer and more intimate atmosphere.

Create a Small Buffet

An extensive buffet won’t be a good idea; it is not wise to give children a stomachache at a party. Besides, there is a risk that many foods will be left over and will have to be thrown away. The rule is: a little goes a long way. Instead, you can prepare snacks such as pudding, mini pizzas, etc. You can also make sandwiches or focaccia, fruit juice, popcorn, and a bag of candy. And the cake? No whipped cream or fresh cream that will spoil in the sun. Jam cakes, fruit cakes, and miniature cupcakes are preferred.

What About the Adults?

Think of your parents and relatives and you will be fine. Set up a relaxation area for the “over-18s”. A table, deck chairs, thirst-quenching drinks would be enough, and plenty of ice. Set up a gazebo or parasol to keep out the sun.

-Brush up on your first aid techniques before the party, just in case.

-Apply sunscreen to light-skinned children.

-Stock up on extra towels for those who forgot to bring their own.

A Bible Party – Wait, Are You Serious?

Dear Readers, 

The title might have shaken the life out of you. Especially for the Christians out there – we being the “temples of the holy spirit” and outlining certain boundaries must have crossed your mind. I want to take a moment, or two, to make it clearer. 

First, God is not the cosmic killjoy you think He is. He wants all of us to be happy and fact is He – and the bible – never specifically prohibited celebration. Nor does He call for complete abstinence from alcoholic beverages. Remembering Jesus’ first miracle (as mentioned in John 2:1-12) may help. 

Now, it all depends on your definition of a “party.” The bible says yes to “fellowship” (social interaction or participation) among brothers and sisters in Christ while eating food with gladness and drinking wine with a joyful heart (Ecclesiastes 9: 7) – quite similar to Jesus’ celebration of the Passover with His disciples – but says no to the get drunk and rage notion. 

It’s not about whether you are ALLOWED to go to those parties. It’s more about what you can DO at such parties. Today’s party culture is pellucid: the drunkenness, binge-eating, too much gossiping, kinky plays… overall, all inappropriate behaviors that are clearly condemned by the Bible. 

Nevertheless, nothing forbids you from celebrating – the “right” way – as long as you refrain from playing with fire. 

My idea of a “good” party would be rediscovering biblical stories through lip-smacking foods and drinks. Let’s see how!

All preparations must be made before the d-day and I strongly recommend assigning tasks. Once it’s decided who’s gonna come over for the bible party – it still sounds a little weird – sort out who will be responsible for what.

At this stage, pretty much everything – the location and time of the party, who will take responsibility for the food and drink and all the activities to be carried out– should already be discussed and decided.

You might want to look for some more creative ideas from the net or go for suggestions.

Before hopping on to some fancy and tasty canapé-style snacks, take note of the particular food allergies of your guest, including their health.

If you still remember the story, during forty years the Israelites were wandering in the desert, they pleaded for food to God when they faced harsh scarcity of food. Miraculously, they were provided with “manna” – known as bread from heaven. After they started kvetching about the free bread and missed the meat from Egypt, God gave those ungrateful quail (everything’s found in Exodus 16).

To match food with this Ancient Testament’s story, I suggest buying some sweet bread and if you are quite the fancy and rich type, then you can have some quails’ eggs.

3. Food From Promised Land

If you know your bible well, you’d know that the Promised Land was referred as “a land flowing with milk and honey” (See Exodus 3:8).

To explore this biblical chapter, I suggest the plain and simple: milk to drink and some honey on slices of bread.

Throwing the Perfect Hanukkah Party

The holiday season is just around the corner, and this is the best time to start preparing for the perfect party. However, not all of us celebrate Christmas, some of us celebrate Hanukkah or even Kwanzaa, so if you are going to celebrate Hanukkah this year, then you ought to do it well. Get everyone to wear their ugly Hanukkah sweater and have your own ugly sweater competition. Hanukkah is a joy, and unlike Christmas, it is not only 1 day; it is an 8-day celebration. This year Hanukkah started early on November 28th and will end on December 6th, but according to the Hebrew calendar, it starts on the 25th month of Kislev. So, get your Hanukkah sweater on, and let’s delve deeper into how to throw the perfect Hanukkah party.

You have to decide when you want to throw your Hanukkah party because it runs for 8-days, so you need to set up on a specif day. So, this gives you ample time to plan and get ready for the party. The most sensible thing to do is throw it over the weekend because this means most of your guests will be free but let’s be real; you can throw your Hanukkah party anytime you want because it’s your party, and you do whatever you want. And no one is going to complain about eating latkes, matzah ball soups, and drinking alcohol. You can also throw your Hanukkah party before or even after the actual 8 nights of Hanukkah, and this means you can still celebrate it around the same time as Christmas and have your own Hanukkah party with your friends. I’ll be honest for a minute, and it’s hard to keep track of what day Hanukkah starts or ends each year because it changes from year to year, and if my mom doesn’t tell me or if I don’t google it, I would be able to know it.

A menorah or the traditional nine branches candles is the perfect centerpiece for your table. When it comes to menorahs, mine is a family heirloom that has been passed down for generations and is the same menorah that I take out each year and light for Hanukkah. Throw a couple of dreidel on your table, and your guest can play with them if they are bored or to have fun. You can also throw your Christmas decoration out too and use some fairy lights. Fairylights are always a great addition to make your décor pop out.

Well, what’s a great party without booze? Now we are not telling you you have to drink to have fun, but for me, booze and great food are the makings of a perfect party. Okay, if you are ballin’ on a budget, then you ought to have a BYOB (Bring Your Own Booze) Hanukkah party. You can have your own bar and have specialty cocktails and make Hanukkah inspired party. Make a dreidel-inspired cocktail and use blue curacao to give it that OG blue dreidel color. Also, eggnog is always appreciated for the holiday season and is one of my favorite holiday drinks.

Food

Let’s get to the good stuff; what’s a good party without good food. And what’s Hanukkah with latkes and matzah ball soup? If you’ve been living under a rock and don’t know what latkes are, then I’m very sad for you. Latkes are the most glorious form of potato; it is finely grated and fired, a bit like a hash brown. And you can never really go wrong with latkes, and they are a classic for a reason. If you aren’t a chef or someone who can cook like me (the only thing I can cook is ramen noodles), then catering is the way to go, or Trader Joe’s is a good alternative too. For me, my mom’s food for her Hanukkah party is the best; she would make only traditional food like roast beef, pot roast, carrot tzimmes, potatoes, and stuffed vine leaves.
